Revolutionizing an industry.

It is a well-known fact that the pomegranate, in addition to its beautiful appearance and unique flavor, is a rich source of healthful properties. Yet despite this, the pomegranate has not been exploited by its numerous potential markets, due to the labor-intensive process of extracting the delicate juice-filled arils.

Now Juran, specialists in developing innovative machinery for the agriculture and food industries, brings you a new automated way of extracting arils, developed by the Agricultural Engineering Institute, making the process ultimately fast, easy, and cost-effective.

The EAP innovation

The Juran method for Extracting Arils from Pomegranates, EAP, is fully automated and highly efficient. In an innovative process, rather than cutting through the fruit and causing a high percentage of damaged arils, the EAP mechanism only scores the peel, and uses a combination of gentle pressure and oscillating air jets to open the fruit and retrieve the arils.

The process:

1.       The fruit is fed inverted, either manually or mechanically, onto a conveyor of open-bottomed circular holders.

2.       The crowns are cut off and grips lift the fruit onto the next level conveyor, pressing it down onto corolla-opening knives that longitudinally score the skin.

3.       Flexible drums press down on the fruit causing it to open in segments and eventually to flatten.

4.       As the fruit is flattened, the arils fall out with the help of oscillating air jets.

5.       The untouched and undamaged arils are gravitationally water-separated from other fruit parts such as peel or membrane, and ready to be conveyed for packing.

The benefits:

  • Efficiency At 95% efficiency, only 3%-5% of arils are damaged, as opposed to previous industry standards of 20%!
  • Labor-saving With only 2 workers, hundreds of pomegranates can be processed per hour.
  • Enhanced product quality Untouched by human hands, undamaged, rinsed and separated from other fruit parts, the outcome is a cleaner, purer, more attractive and more hygienic product than previously obtainable.
  • Cost-effective Now that pomegranate arils can be quickly and efficiently extracted, at lower cost with a higher yield and improved quality, potential markets can finally take off!

Did you know? The pomegranate is actually higher in antioxidants that promote heart health and provide numerous other benefits, than either red wine, citrus or cranberry juice. With the new EAP system, the pomegranate can become a major ingredient for pharmaceuticals, health foods, the consumer market, juice manufacturers and the food industry:

1. Feed station – Pomegranates enter the EAP system.
2. Peels and other fruit parts are discarded after separation from arils.
3. The whole arils, fresh-cut and rinsed, can now be conveyed for packing.
