Russian energy giant Gazprom plans to join the bid for the Benjamin offshore gas exploration license, Reuters reported. The Benjamin prospect is located off central Israel's coastline, between Tel Aviv and Hadera. Gazprom is the world's third largest natural gas supplier, providing 25% of Europe's gas needs.
According to the report, Gazprom, together with Modiin Energy, the IDB Group and Israel Land Development are considering bidding for a new tender for exploratory offshore drilling. Gazprom is likely to play the role of "operator" in any future deal.
